As the topic title says really, am after one or two bits for my rig. The main thing I'm after is some new PA stuff - my current system is... shocking, to be honest... so I'm after a replacement. Have listened to Wharfedale, Peavey and Intimdation speakers, as well as W Audio and Pulse amps. My budget isn't huge for this, ideally no more than £175 (but I can stretch it a little if necessary) - I'm ideally after a pair of SVP15s, but I know that might be wishful thinking! I play mainly small to medium venues, no more than 150 people at the mo. I'm thinking around 200W RMS (give or take) would be fine.

Secondly I'm after a pair of scanners. I'd prefer flats rather than barrels, but I'm open to suggestions here. I currently use an aincent pair of Abstract Gladiators. Any thoughts/offers would be appreciated. I'd also like a decent pair of DMXable gobo flowers (although I may be buying a pair of Twister 3/4's from DJ Charles, but I thought I'd ask anyway)

Hey
For starters you will needa much bigger sound system for 150 people. With a decent effincey you would still need around 1-1.2kw as a general rule. Anything less than that you will be really pushing your speakers and Amp, this is where distortion comes in .... makes it sound awful ... and .... could fry everything!

Hmm, good point... I have only ever actually done a gig that big once now I think about it. I'm more used to village halls and social clubs.

for any party above 80ish people i use a 1.3kw rig. Better to have to much power than not enough. When i start to get to 150, i add a pair of subs and for 200+ i add an extra pair of top ends mounted from the trussing. Gets very complicated with all of these systems but well worth it to give a good quality sound.

My advice would be to trawl ebay from some used bargains... what speakers have you got at the moment? I remember seeing an active Kam bass unit which was about 450w It didnt sell for £175, you may just be able to add a bass bin to your set up for the time being, then save up some more money and add a pair of decenet top ends in the future.

Hi I use for the smaller venue a pair of JBL eon 1500's you can pick them up for a reasonable price on ebay, don't buy the light grey 15's as the lack a little in comparison on the bass response, unless you want to run them with bass cabs then they will provide good mid and top. I run the 15's with 4 x 500w 18" cabs (3k amp) and a 800w amp for the eons to great effect in venues of 250 people.

The 1500's been a slightly different construction has a better bass resonance, although I drive them quite hard with a 1300w amp so depsite been rated at 240w each at 8ohms put about 400w into each. The benefit is for a slightly larger venue I add a mates pair of 500w bins on a 2k amp this fills in the bass.

The benefit is they are very light and portable, can be stand mounted, and have good protection built in on the horns, they have 2 bulbs which draw any excess power off, if you see a glowing from the air ports you know your pushing the tops too much.

I have a pair of plastic powered Yamaha 15s, they are 400w RMS each and would be ok for about 150 folk, they have covers and are in resonable cosmetic condition, I am after £300 for them.

A general rule of thumb is 6w rms per head so really for 150 people you are looking for about 900w, but it can vary according to room size type of music being played, how loud the punters are, driver size, speaker placement and so on. If you keep mor or less within that figure you shouldn't go far wrong.
